As long as the employer does not reimburse the employee for the cost of the miles, the employee is able to deduct those miles using the standard mileage rate or calculating the actual expenses incurred. The expense is taken as an itemized deduction on Schedule A of Form 1040. In order to compute the proper deduction, IRS Form 2106 - Employee Business Expenses needs to be completed and attached to the income tax return. Parking fees and tolls can also be deducted on this form. It is important to note that commuting miles to and from work are generally ineligible.
