What documents do I need in order to complete my tax return?

In order to complete your income tax return properly, you need to make sure that you have all of the information returns for the tax year in question. These include your W-2s that totals your gross wages and associated payroll taxes withheld; 1099’s that detail the list of payments you have received from pensions, retirement account distributions, dividends and interest paid and more; as well as 1098s for your home mortgage that details the mortgage interest paid. You also need the proper documentation to complete Schedule A of the 1040, which allows you to itemize certain expenses on your tax return.
