Taxpayers who volunteer their time to a charitable organization, such as an educational facility, church, scientific center can deduct the mileage to and from the volunteer location. When calculating the amount of this expense, you can use the actual cost of driving to and from the location (gas and oil) or you can use the standard mileage rate for volunteer activities, which is lower than that used for business purposes. However, if the charitable organization reimbursed you for the miles, you are not allowed to include those miles in the deduction, which is taken on Schedule A of Form 1040.
