Taxpayers can file their taxes use a variety of filing statuses, such as Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separate, Head of Household and Qualified Widower. Single taxpayers are individuals who are unmarried, divorced or legally separated. Married Filing Joint is the status that a legally married couple commonly use. Married Filing Separate is when both spouses file their own tax return --this status has certain limitations and penalties. Head of Household is used by an unmarried taxpayer when they pay for more than half of the costs of maintaining a household and can claim a qualified dependent. Qualified Widower is when a spouse dies during the tax year and a dependent child is claimed.
