You can claim Head of Household, as long as you were unmarried or considered unmarried by the IRS on the last day of the year or you paid more than half the costs of maintaining a home for your parent (whether they lived with you or on their own, you have the ability to claim your parent as a dependent). This would mean that your parent would not be able to claim themselves for the personal exemption on their personal income tax return. Claiming Head of Household will increase your standard deduction greater than that of Single or Married Filing Separate.
