Taxpayers who would like to get a head start on their income taxes can submit their tax returns as soon as the IRS begins accepting them. The exact date depends on whether you are e-filing or mailing in your return. For e-filers, it is typically around mid-January. For paper returns, they can be mailed in starting January 1st; however, the IRS is not likely to process them until after e-filing acceptance has begun. It is important to note that most taxpayers do not have the proper tax documentation for early submission, since employers and third parties have until January 31st to send out their information returns (W-2s, 1099s, etc.).
