As part of the medical expense deduction on Schedule A of Form 1040, taxpayers can include the cost of the mileage that they incur in order to seek qualified medical treatments. You are able to include the actual out-of-pocket costs of obtaining medical treatments, including gas and oil. Instead of tracking actual costs, the IRS created the standard medical mileage rate for a simplified accounting. You still need to keep a written log of the mileage that was driven during the tax year. As with the other deductible and qualified medical expenses, the overall mileage deduction is subject to the 7.5% of Adjusted Gross Income limitation.
